Group of people on a beach with a cooler The first weekend in September marks the end of the glorious summer season here in Charleston. For some tourists and vacationers, the Labor Day weekend is the time they wistfully pack away car luggage racks, beach umbrellas and surf boards and make a promise to return to the beach next year. For others, they’ll celebrate the end of the summer with a trip to this historic city and a long list of things to do.

Why has this holiday weekend become the iconic end to the summer? Giving an extra day of rest & relaxation, as well as a tribute for “job well done “, is exactly what lawmakers intended the holiday to represent. The Labor Day holiday was first proposed in the United States nearly 130 years ago by a member of the Central Labor Union as a way to pay tribute to the contributions workers made to the success and prosperity of the land. After originally being celebrated on a Tuesday, it was moved to the 1st Monday in September in 1884. A decade later, in 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday and the citizens of the U.S. have celebrated the 3-day weekend ever since.

Sure Charleston is a place that is rich in history and home to an array of fabulous 5-star restaurants and great Southern food.  But Labor Day weekend might just be the perfect time to relax with your feet in the sand at one of Charleston’s scenic beaches, where you can even end the day shaggin’ (the dance) under the moonlight on the Pier at Folly Beach. Swing on over to the The Gaillard Center for the 10th Annual Lowcountry Jazz Festival for a celebration of Charleston’s Jazz music legacy, Sep 1-2.

If your travel plans don’t bring you here until later in September … don’t worry, there’s always something to do in the Holy City! Here are some upcoming events you won’t want to miss. This year Charleston Restaurant Week is partnering with Charleston Beer Week to bring you 11 days of local taps & tastes, Sep 5-16. The event partners with a variety of local restaurants, from casual to upscale and everything in between, to celebrate the local cuisine and the talented chefs behind them. It’s going to be a great month!
