History can be found around every corner in Charleston. We knew our building was built in 1770 by Major Peter Bocquet who was a member of the General Assembly, a State Treasurer and a Commissioner of Sequestrated Estates. We even have a plaque just outside the front door that draws a steady stream of curious onlookers everyday. Since taking up residence in the orange house on Broad Street, we’ve learned a great deal about the homes unique history.
The Library Society on King Street is a short walk over from 95 Broad. They have a wealth of information on everything from architecture to art to family lineage.
We inquired to see if there was any information on our lovely office building. While the search for history and information is never over (we’re still investigating), we did find out a couple fun facts.
If not for one Ronald H. Momier, 95 Broad would not be here today. He originally planned to demolish the building, but decided restoration of our historic structure would be more beneficial than additional parking spaces for his Piggly Wiggly on 101 Broad Street.
Additionally, 95 Broad has traditionally been a dual use building—business on the first floor, family living space on the other floors. When we took ownership of the home with the intention of converting all three floors into business space, as well as converting the attic into a fully loaded appartment, we knew it would require a little work. Fortunately for us, we have the historic renovation experts at Luxury Simplified Construciton who executed a full renovation while maintaining many of the buildings original features.
