Dogs are man’s best friend. That age-old adage can apply to women and children too. The furry friends are there for us through thick and thin, always ready with a lick or a game of catch.

There are certainly challenges that come with having a dog, especially a large breed, in a city. Many homes in downtown Charleston have little yard space for dogs stretch their legs and run. While dog-friendly apartment and condo buildings provide a dog park area, much of the apartment housing in downtown Charleston are converted home and second story rooms above merchant stores, with out the luxury of an on-site dog park. Fortunately Charleston is a notoriously dog-friendly city with many shops and restaurants welcoming dogs and dog-owners alike. The city has also done an excellent job of making space for dogs by creating dog-friendly parks and green spaces.

Charleston and the surrounding areas are replete with parks and areas to take your four-legged friend. Here are some of our favorite Charleston dog parks:

1. James Island County Park:
871 Riverland Drive, Charleston SC 29412

2. Mount Pleasant Palmetto Islands County Park:
444 Needlerush Parkway, Mt. Pleasant SC 29464

3. Hampton Park Bark Park:
122 Grove Street (approximate address)

4. Hazel Parker Dog Run Downtown:
70 East Bay Street

5. Horse Lot Downtown:
Between Chisolm Street and Ashley Avenue, just south of Broad Street

If you’re just looking to take Fido for a relaxing walk, try a jaunt around Colonial Lake or Waterfront Park.
