Cobble Stone Street in Charleston SC

South Carolina is one of the best places to retire in the US! As a Realtor, I have worked with people from all parts of the country looking to retire to the South. Many of my clients come from the North with its harsher climates, eager to enjoy our warm sunshine and sandy beaches. My favorite day during a client’s journey is when they close on their property and relax into the slower pace of living in the South. I love hearing them say, “What took us so long? We should have been enjoying this life years ago. I don’t miss my previous home at all!”

So how did they make this important decision of choosing South Carolina for their retirement? I believe South Carolina is one of the most desirable locations due to its diversity of attractions and lifestyles. Historic districts like downtown Charleston, as well as the quaint mill villages in the upstate that lend to the rich history of downtown Greenville, distinguish our state. Small southern towns like McClellanville, Summerville and Walterboro are other appealing options offering a laid back lifestyle to enjoy the later years of life. Many of my Northern clients have been used to long commutes into the city, so nearby towns offering great value, charm and a peaceful existence are a draw to these big city transplants. If one would rather enjoy a more urban lifestyle, South Carolina offers this too with walkable historic districts, revitalized urban areas, and bustling towns like Mount Pleasant full of new shopping and busy restaurants.

Whether it be golfing, biking, walking or water sports the sky is the limit in South Carolina. Having more than 200 miles of beaches, over 350 golf courses, and thousands of miles of natural parks and protected land makes this a haven for retirees who enjoy the outdoors. Our climate is suitable for enjoying the outdoors almost year-round. When touring homes with my Northern clients I often tease them by saying, “You really do not need a coat closet in South Carolina.” A good insulated raincoat will be your most worn item when the weather is foul, but shorts are a must all year-round so don’t make the mistake of putting away your summer clothes. Around here, Labor Day doesn’t necessarily mark the end of summer – and as a result, we are known to wear white all year round on the Coast!  But, when you retire to the South and start your house-hunt remember … a guest room is a MUST – because it will be used a lot! Relatives and friends who you have not heard from in years will come out of the woodwork to visit you here in South Carolina. You’ll always want to have a porch swing and a pitcher of sweet tea ready to welcome them.

The conversation gets more serious when my clients actually retire, and begin to plan for life in a new city. This is when the hard questions begin. Questions such as … “What are the medical facilities like? What lifestyles do you offer? Will I fit in with this new culture and environment? Will my kids visit us? What is the best location for our needs? ” This is where the fun begins. I have lived all over the Southeast, from Florida to North Carolina. I am familiar with the Southern regions, the different cultures and the progress of all of these areas and oftentimes can be a good resource for my clients who are choosing a location in the South.

I now reside in Charleston which I believe offers the best of the South. Charleston is always changing, renewing itself with its influx of cultural experiences, the unique tapestry of people in the region. Entrepreneurs also gather in our city, many drawn to the region’s inspiring art venues and growing technical hubs, which spur innovation and commerce. Because of our award winning area here in Charleston, we boast some of the best medical facilities, supported by medical professionals who are eager to live in our region. We have some of the best doctors and specialist in the country!

The South is changing and much of this change is due to the diversity of people moving into the South. Our cities and towns are reflecting this movement of people into our region, with eclectic world-class restaurants, museums housing impressive art collections and even a newly renovated, world-renowned auditorium opened by none other than Yo Ma Ma.

Note: Making the move to South Carolina is easy once you decide this laid back lifestyle is for you. The decision is the first hurdle to make, after that, the rest is smooth sailing. Let us share our Southern hospitality by welcoming you to visit our Southern shores, quaint towns and growing historic districts – and discover whether or not Charleston just might be the perfect place for you.  What are you waiting for?
