Rainbow Row is one of the most iconic Charleston images. Thanks to these brightly colored homes, East Bay Street has become to popular stop for tourists.
The pink section, 99-101 East Bay Street, was the first to take the plunge into vibrancy.
Other homeowners on the row were inspired and followed suit. The unique light colors, achieved through a process called lime washing, served the practical purpose of helping to keep them cool, an important factor during the hot southern summers.
Myths surrounding the pastel hues of the homes are as colorful as the domiciles themselves. Some say the homes were painted varying colors so drunken sailors, a not uncommon occurrence in the bustling port city, could find their way home after a raucous night out. Others say the homes were painted a plethora of colors so illiterate slaves could find the correct store when shopping.
Regardless of the origin, the Caribbean color scheme adds a unique flair to the city and a lovely spot for a bit of photography.
