If you can’t feel it in the air already you can certainly see that tell-tale yellow coating (of pollen) on everything that indicates springtime in Charleston SC is rapidly approaching. One of the best aspects of living in our beautiful, coastal city is the incredible weather we have almost year round – which makes you want to spend the afternoon, or even the whole day, outside.  Whether it be on a Sunday afternoon touring around the city, or even just a lunch break, spending time at one of the many parks around Charleston is beyond worth it. 

A few of our favorites – whether for an afternoon stroll or a picnic for two – are located both on and off the peninsula. Take advantage of free admission to certain Charleston County Parks this Sunday, March 5 for Customer Appreciation Day.

HAMPTON PARK

Hampton Park is a local favorite, from the breathtaking array of flowers and trees, to the resident turtles and ducks, it’s a green sanctuary in the middle of the downtown Charleston peninsula. On any given day, you’ll find runners, tourists and locals scattered about the park. If you haven’t already, why not plan to take an afternoon picnic to Hampton Park and relax to the smells of fresh flowers and birds singing. Just remember, if you bring your four-legged friend be sure to keep the leash close as they’re strictly enforcing leash laws now.

WATERFRONT PARK

If you’re a local, you may overlook Waterfront Park, or consider it a “tourist trap ” for all the visitors that frequent the park to get the classic Instagram photo of the Pineapple Fountain. But don’t overlook the beauty and history that stems from this beautiful boardwalk. From this 8-acre park, you can see Fort Sumter, Sullivan’s Island, and maps that show the history of how our city has changed over the years. Take a minute to unwind, fish off the pier, or sway on the bench swings – you’re sure to witness the simple joys little ones find while splashing around the splash fountain on hot summer days. There is even wireless access in case you want to step out of the office and have a serene setting to work in.

JAMES ISLAND COUNTY PARK

From campgrounds, to disc golf courses, dog parks, miles of walking/running trails and picnic areas, this park can be anything you are looking for. On any given day, you can go for a tranquil run, bring the dog to make some friends at the dog park, go fishing or kayaking.  James Island County Park is home to one of the largest and most popular Splash Zone Waterparks in the entire CCPR system. With 200-foot open water slide, Caribbean play structure with slides, wheels, and sprays, and 500-foot lazy river with an adventure channel of sprays and waterwalls, this is where you and your family are sure to make memories of summertime fun! And, when it comes time for the holiday festival of lights, you’ll be mesmerized by over 3-miles of 700 twinkling light displays.

WHITE POINT GARDENS  > AKA BATTERY PARK  <

Take a walk through White Point Gardens and 8 out of 10 times, you’re sure to see bridal party photos being taken. It’s one of the most famous parks in Charleston (and most photographed!) with its rich history, location among some of the most historic homes in our nation, and it’s beautiful iconic gazebos. Situated at the tip of the peninsula in the heart of the historic South of Broad neighborhood, lined with cannons dating back to the Civil War, Battery Park was the launch site of artillery used to defend Charleston during the war. It’s another spot in the city where you’re sure to see plenty of runners and walkers, taking in the breathtaking views of Charleston Harbor.

BRITTLEBANK PARK

This 10-acre park, adjacent to the beloved Joe Riley Stadium (home of the Charleston Riverdogs), is well-known as the home of the annual “Dock Dogs ” competition held during the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition. With an off-leash area for your “furbabies, ” a playground for the kiddos (with handicap accessibility), and beautiful sunset views over the Ashley River, Brittlebank Park is a perfect after-work or afternoon hang out.
