There are certain restaurants that come to mind when thinking about Charleston SC. They are often the award winning “destination restaurants ” featured in glossy food magazines every year and certainly, Charleston is famous for its fine dining because of establishments like Husk and Halls Chophouse.  But what some fail to recognize are the cheap eats that are daily options for office workers and college students alike.  Keeping this in mind, we decided to create a list of restaurants around Charleston that are both tasty and inexpensive – and some of the places that you’ll find packed with local folks!

Martha Lou’s Kitchen

The tiny pink restaurant located at 1068 Morrison Drive offers some of the best fried chicken South of the Mason Dixon. Macaroni and cheese, collard greens, catfish … you name a true “soul food ” and Martha Lou’s will most likely have it. Make sure to drink a tall glass of sweet tea for a complete Southern experience. 

Gaulart & Maliclet/Fast & French

Also known as Fast & French, the restaurant located at 98 Broad Street creates an atmosphere that resembles dining in a quaint European town.  Experience the variety of daily specials which include a sandwich or entrée with a soup, fresh fruit, and a glass of wine.

Bertha’s Kitchen

2332 Meeting Street Road. Head to Bertha’s Kitchen to grab a Generous southern soul food platter on a Styrofoam plate – Better than anyone’s grandma ever made! This inexpensive cafeteria-style restaurant serves delicious fried chicken, corn bread and the best mac and cheese we’ve ever had! Rumor has it the okra soup will blow your mind.

Hannibal’s Kitchen 

16 Blake St. Located on the East Side of the peninsula, Hannibal’s Kitchen offers authentic southern delicacies like crab rice, a Gullah staple. Savor the fine taste of sautéed crab or shrimp over grits for breakfast and sandwiches, chicken wings, and more for lunch and dinner. Nothing fancy. True soul.  With a tag-line that actually claims, “Where the locals hang out ” you don’t even have to take our word for it!

Tattooed Moose

1137 Morrison Dr.  Featured on the Food Network’s “On The Road” & “Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives” with Guy Fieri, this local watering hole has a real “dive bar ” feel.  Our Favorite sandwich the “duck club sandwich ” is constantly crowned “Best Sandwich of Charleston.” Pick up a tasty sandwich, duck fries, or even Kimchi and head to the outdoor seating area for a fantastic lunch or diner!
